A simple and useful site for measuring and monitoring your own carbon emissions.  It turns your own data/information into graphs which are updated however often you update your meter readings, car mileage (if you have one).

What do you want from your green space?
How would you like your children use the outside spaces available to them?
Do you want to get away from the shrub/grass Estate culture?
This conference is an unique opportunity to be inspired by some of the leading figures making a difference to our urban green spaces.

On Saturday 12th September 2009, Transition City Manchester hosted a Transition Towns room at the Communities for Change event at MMU Didsbury.

As one of the first events we’ve organized, we are very pleased with both our planning for, and running of the day. Our room became a hive of activity that flowed onto the lawn outside, and we were able to discuss Transition with many new faces.

We made sure we had lots of things going on, including activities that people could join in with, as well as conversations with people who specialize in certain Transition related subjects, including Renewable Energy, Making A Personal Transition, Peak Oil, Climate Change, and Wormeries & Composting.

Taking centre stage in our room was a life size tree sculpture, whose roots described the pioneering role that Manchester has played in shaping the world today, and upon whose leaves visitors wrote their visions for Manchester’s future, two of our favourites being, “Everyone involved in harvesting,” and “Bicycle libraries everywhere for free bike hire.”

In keeping with the Transition concept of valuing creativity over consumption we invited our visitors to participate in a range of activities, from making bird feeders and morsbags (a cotton alternative to plastic bags), to knitting and juggling.

One of our key aims for the day was to make contact with other Transition initiatives around the Northwest. Many people who have started, or are considering starting a Transition Town came along and discussed future networking possibilities, which lead to the formation of a Facebook group, Transition North West England www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=131499999769

As well as successes on the day, we feel the event has helped the group in building momentum, defining who we are and what we do, and in teaching us valuable lessons for enhancing our future events, which we are now looking forward to more than ever.

Hello All

Friends of the Earth have produced a Carbon Footprint survey which you might like to try…

http://shapeup.limequery.com/index.php shouldn’t take anymore more than 2 or 3 minutes if you’re a fast reader.  Plus there is an option to receive free handy hints and tips too from Friends of the Earth on how to reduce your carbon footprint (should you need to).

Best Wishes, Tim.

The Call to Real Action (C2RA) is a grass-roots community response to Manchester City Council’s climate change Call to Action document. It is a report on what we as citizens as well as the Council should be doing to tackle climate change and address the challenges it presents.

Members of the TCM were involved in the production of the C2RA which was launched on the night of April 6th at Nexus Art Cafe in the Northern Quarter to a full house! As far a we are aware, Manchester Climate Forum is the only voluntary/community group to have examined and challenged a public authority’s climate change action plan in the whole of the United Kingdom, perhaps even the world. It is of course a work in progress and the on-line version of the C2RA shall be updated regularly. So please keep checking back.

We also welcome comments and views and hope that challenges to our work will allow for more thorough and robust climate change action.

On Tuesday the 21st April Transition City Manchester will be holding an open and pubic meeting at the Friends Meeting Housing to discuss what to do next. Transition is explained on pages 47 – 51 of the C2RA. Please come along – all are welcome.

C2RA is available here.

Best Wishes, TCM Team.
